Understanding the Unique Pie Gene!!!

Most people have coined  the term ‘PIE’ when referring to the piebald/white spotting gene. It is equally as fascinating  and wonderful as  the homemade pie that we enjoy over the holidays but the recipe is much more complicated! The S locus is responsible for this white spotting in  many breeds of canine. The Great Dane displays this pattern with such an elegant, regal appearance. The white is typically not symmetrical and looks like a white dog with various color pattern often on the head and tail. S is a recessive gene which means in order for this trait to show, each parent must give the offspring one copy of S to be SS. If only one parent gives the S gene than the offspring is a carrier and the trait does not show.
